Dewey’s AaE Paper

Term Paper Assignment – HUHI 6355 – Fall 2019

Prompts

Your paper should respond to one of the following prompts:

  1. The place of Dewey’s Art as Experience in the pragmatist philosophical tradition — Write about the relationship between the ideas of Dewey’s book and other ideas from Dewey’s ouvre or the larger pragmatist tradition.
  2. The place of Dewey’s Art as Experience in the philosophy of art — Write about the relationship between the ideas in Dewey’s book and other figures or movements in the philosophy of art. You can discuss influence in a intellectual-historical mode, or contrast figures in a dialectical mode.
  3. Exploring Dewey’s Art as Experience in light of some work of art — You should provide a philosophical engagement with some specific work of art (broadly construed, including creative writing and popular arts). This should not be a simple argument that, say, Dewey’s theory does not apply to some work, nor that Dewey’s theory provides a positive or negative evaluation of some work, though evaluations rather than mere descriptions are welcome. Nuanced engagements that reveal new interpretations of Dewey’s ideas, new ways of thinking about art objects, and tensions and problems with either are preferred.
  4. Other — Must be verbally approved by Professor Brown prior to turning in a topic proposal.

Proposals

You should turn in a 300-500 word topic proposal in class by or before October 28th. It should be as descriptive as possible of your planned paper. No specific format required; give me enough information in the space allowed to determine whether you aree on the right track. Please feel free to submit early.
